WHY NEW OGUN RADIO STATION, SMASH FM 88.1, IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS – GM, SEUN DAVIES TELLS CITY PEOPLE

Popular Ogun broadcaster, Seun Davies is back on the beat, fully. She is the GM of the newest radio station in Abeokuta, Ogun State called Smash 88.1FM. She is a seasoned broadcaster who has paid her dues. Over the years, she has worked with many old radio stations like OGBC. This has prepared her for her new job.

When did the radio station start? We asked her.

“We actually started off in September. Officially we started in September 2018, although we started our Test transmission in July 2018. But we went on air on September 1, 2018”.

What is Smash FM all about? We asked her.

“It’s a youth centric radio station, something not entirely new in Abeokuta, because I am a product of OGBC. But it’s a new dimension, away from what is obtainable in Abeokuta, as we speak, with all due respect to other radio stations who are doing fantastically well.”

What is the Content of programming like?

“They are all youth centric, regular programming though, but geared towards Youth development and Growth. If you are youthful at heart, we consider you an ardent listener and someone that we can consider to be our target audience. We have content based on Education. We also cater to the needs of Children as well, even artisans. That is why we say “Smash FM is for everyone, not necessarily because you are very young, but because you are young at heart”.

How easy was it for her to take up the appointment to run Smash FM?

“It is something I have always looked forward to. I have always wanted to run a station which I would start from the scratch and I was part of the team from the scratch. We named the station together. We built the Content together. Everyone knows that when it comes to Content creation, that is what I am good at. That is what I do all the time.

The Board has given me the free hand to experiment with what I have always wanted to do. I have gathered a lot of experience in the various sectors of our national life, including the financial sector. What we do basically is not just broadcasting, but we are looking at the business aspect of it, so that we are not just burning diesel or burning airtime. You are also thinking of getting resources back to those who have invested in the business.”

How do you deal with Competition? How do you react to those who wondered if the airwaves is not already congested for another station like Smash FM to join?
“You can say that again. Before we went on air, we did some research. We asked our target audience, (so to speak), what they wanted to listen to. Things they weren’t getting. We actually administered questionaires. We went to schools. We went round town, even to the hinterland. And we got feedbacks. Although everyone will be worried by the proliferation, but the sky is just big enough for everyone to fly and still excel. I think it’s getting to the point where everyone will have to specialise in a particular field. You have to be known for what you stand for. We are youth-centric. Everything that we use as content are youthful. We try to break new frontiers. You will just know that this is Hip, and it is Hot and it is still very Fresh”. Right now, there are about 12, 13, 14 stations and still counting. Many are still coming to join us we hear”.
