Body type is the anatomical structure of the human body. Understanding the body type helps in knowing what fits perfectly to youR body. The idea is to make sure the dresses we choose sit beautifully and proportionately and enhance your looks. Short, tall, slender, curvy etc.
Types of Body Type
-Apple body type
-Pear body type
-Hourglass body type
-Rectangle body type
Apple body type: the busy is three or more inches bigger than the hips , slim limbs” arms especially “ wide shoulders are usually a strong characteristic of this body type. Weight is concentrated around the midsection and chest giving the appearance of a bigger bust and protruding stomach at times.
How to dress Apple Body Type
-Follow your body line and keep details of the top and lower third of your body. It’s easy to wear shirts, blouses or dresses with slight v- necks without looking too fancy or over the top .
- Draw attention away from your waist , shoulder and arms (wear long sleeves) and draw attention to your busy and neck ( v-necks).
-Choosr flares skirts or pants over straight leg or skinny pants and help balance out wide shoulders and or a heavy upper body. Wear bottoms just below your hipbone to draw attention away from your midriff.
-Layered skirts with a body top or a shirt .
- Wrapped style tops .
-Chiffon or fluidy fabric.
- Enhancing a feature that is further away or you can cover it with dark colors.
Prag body type: is the opposite of an Apple body type. This body type is characterized by an heavy bottom “triangle” , the hips is larger than the bust, hips, thighs and sometimes your behind are more noticeable, shoulder are narrow, sloping and not as broad. It’s the most curvaceous body shape . It’s a simple one to notice just by looking at your legs as they are sometimes noticeably more wider, muscular and fuller compared to the rest of your body.
How to dress a Pear Body Type
- Balance your top with your bottom. Try to wear tops that accentuate your shoulders a bit more.
-Avoid pants or tights that narrows your legs.
-Wear straight leg or slightly flared pants with heels, skinny pants that hug your ankles can make your lower body take on the appearance of an upside- down triangle.
-Add to your shoulder by wearing puff sleeves, pleated sleeves.
-Wear padded bustier , ruffle blouses, cowl neck blouses, canoe necklines, U-necklines, wide v-neck to accentuate the upper region “bust”.
-Highwaist pants and skirts.
-Straight leg jeans.
- A-line dresses and skirts.
Hourglass Body type: the hip and busy measurements are usually equal with a narrow waist. This body type tends to be curvy both on top and on the bottom, you can still have an hourglass body even when you are slightly fleshy on the upper arms, wider looking shoulders or a slightly fuller bottom . An hourglass is also known as figure 8.
How to dress an Hourglass Body Type
-Use your waist as the focal point when dressing. This means to wear snug clothes and accessories around the thinnest part “waist”, directing attention here will make your curves stand out even more.
-Dress to flatter your beautiful curves by following your body’s outline. Tailored clothing is usually more flattering.
-Balance your top and bottom while accentuating your waist. Draw attention to your waist with belts and dress that pinch at the midsection.
-Women with curves can end up revealing too much cleavage. If a neckline is too deep or is inappropriate leave those clothes on the rack.
-Shape your bust , if you have an hourglass shape, you probably have plenty of bust, your main concern should be to wear a supportive bra so that your chest looks perky and not droopy or saggy.
-Embrace v-neck dresses and tops , while Manu necklines work well for well endowed women. V-necks are quite flattering, just be sure you don’t show much cleavage than appropriate.
Straight or rectangular body type : characterized with a long thin body that tends to lack curves. It’s sometimes referred to as a boyish profile . The waist is about the same as the hips and bust. Your silhouette is not as curvy as the Pear or Apple body.
How to dress a straight or rectangular body type
-Gk for ruffles and frills to add texture , volume and femininity to your figure. For instance , a dress with a lot of embellishments at the bust will often give some weight there that makes are look a bit bigger.
- Steer clear of men’s wear clothing .
-Stack up on miniskirts and bright tights to make the most of your great legs . They will also add more shape to a straight body.
-Ball gowns to make the lower extremities fuller.
-Peplum, tops with belts, shirts with fitted waistline gives the waist line fittings and make it look curvy.
If you are a petite woman (short or skinny) avoid full length coats and maxi dresses. Choose cropped jackets , shorts and mini dresses to keep your petite frame in perfect proportion.
Don’t be so quick to turn something down because you aren’t used to wearing it.

Choose colors and patterns wisely . If there are any curves , handles or lumps that you would prefer to hide , wear solid dark colors ( black, navy blue and dark purple ) over them.
Wear bright colors or patterns on your hot spots to draw attention away from your trouble spots.
Dresses or tops that wrap around your waist and cross over your chest are only a good idea if you have an ample bust, otherwise it can make your busy look disproportionately tiny ( pear shaped) or your chest and shoulders loom flat and square ( straight or rectangular shape).
If have a flat stomach and you aren’t shy about showing it, cropped tops will make your chest look a little bigger in realtion to your waist.
