Everyone wants to have perfect skin, a skin that glows and shines. This makes a lot of us go and try a lot of cosmetic products on our skin with the hopes of getting the beautiful skin we want.

There are many misconceptions about how one is meant to take good care of one's skin. Aside from going to the SPA, getting a manicure or a pedicure, there are actions we take that can affect our skin positively or negatively
In this article I will be writing on:

- Truth about skincare
- Mistakes people make in taking care of their skin
- Ways to prevent it
- Natural ways to take good care of your skin no matter your skin colour.

TRUTH ABOUT SKINCARE
Having good skin is not all about the chemicals you apply on your skin, it deals more with what you take in. Meaning the foods we eat, and the drinks we take into our body goes a long way in affecting our skin, it's health, how it appears, and how smooth it becomes.

The FACE

It is also very important to note that our face has higher acidity level than the rest of our body. Therefore we are not meant to:
- touch our faces with our hands but rather with a piece of cloths (a face towel or handkerchief)
- use the same soap we use to bath to wash our face. It's advisable to use facial cleanser to wash our faces.

 For example:

- Drinking water early in the morning after waking up flushes your body system of any dirt in your body which you will urinate away that morning. It also helps in opening up the pores of your skin for fresh air to pass through.

- Eating lots of fruits will help give your skin that natural glow, and keep it healthy, smooth, and radiant. Fruits like Orange, Banana, Avocado,Tomatoe, and vegetable, such as Carrot.

Did you know?: That most bleaching creams active ingredient is carotine which is gotten from Carrots.

Carrots are the source of many bleaching creams, that's why scientists have proven that if you eat too much carrots, your skin begins to turn red just like the colour of carrot. That is why eating carrot moderately also helps in giving your skin a lighter colour.

- Drinking too much of milk is actually bad for your skin.
- Eating too much of Junk foods is bad for your skin.

It's also important to know that because of the desperation level of this generation of youths in getting a perfect skin is high. Cosmetic industries have added excess lighting agents to their products to give a fast result which on the long run affects their skin in the future. Their cheeks become red, then later black as a result of the reaction to the cosmetic products they were using at their youthful age. And many other effects such as slagging skin, reddish rash looking skin etc.

MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE IN TAKING CARE OF THEIR SKIN

While some skin care routines people take are good, but their approach to it is
Sunburn skin
wrong. Thereby getting an unfavorable reaction to their skin than expected, and they are:
- Applying cream to your skin during hot season, when the sun is shining hot. This is a common mistake many Nigerians make when applying cream to their face and skin.
In Nigeria we have a dry, and wet season. In each season their are different types of cream to use.

During Dry season:

Dry season is when the sun shines the most, hot. During this period it is advisable to use Sunscreen creams when going out so as to protect your skin from the ultra violet rays from the sun which can cause damages to your skin. Sunscreens contain SPH which helps prevent the sun from entering into your skin.

The mistake we make is we use the normal moisturizer creams, lighting creams, tone, on our skin when going under the hot sun which is not meant to be. This causes irritation to the skin, excessive sweating, and most of all Sun burn (parts of the skin burnt by the rays of the sun)

The solution is to use sunscreen when going out during dry season or anytime you see or notice that the sun is shining bright and hot in the sky, so as to protect you from sunburn! Also, get an umbrella, it helps protect you from the sun greatly.
During Wet season:

It is not advisable to use Sunscreen during wet season, as there are more rains than the sun shining. You can go ahead to apply your moisturizers, tone, lighting creams during this period.

IMPORTANT: The sunscreens, and other creams you use, you must be careful to get the few good ones which actually work.

- Staying under the sun for too long will most definitely affect your skin by causing sunburn. Yes, the hustle and bustle of life sometimes gets us in places we have no choice but to be under the sun. Notwithstanding if you want a sun burn free skin, you have to look for a shade or you get an umbrella. Using Sunscreen is good but staying under the sun for too long does not guarantee a safe skin.

- The most common skin mistake people make is using cosmetic products that are not meant for their skin colour.

Light complexion using products for dark complexion and vise versa.

If you are light skinned avoid using products that have moisturizers in them, and as a dark complexion person avoid using products that have carotine in them as they are bleaching agents meant for light skin and not dark skin.

The use of Coconut oil is mean mostly for dark complexion people not light complexion people.

Carrot oil is meant mosly for light complexion people not dark complexion people.
Doing otherwise can cause unfavorable effects to your skin.

WAYS TO PREVENT IT

You need to understand the type of skin you have. If it' oily skin, dry skin, light skin, or dark skin. This goes a long way in choosing which types of products to use for your skin, also decisions to make concerning your skin.

The best way to prevent common mistakes made concerning our skincare is to know the type of skin you have, and how the skin operates.
