Silver Lining for COVID 19:Farming,Healthcare & Home Schooling

* Farming

One of the silver linings for Covid-19 is Farming. We have seen how food supply has been threatened globally with the outbreak of the pandemic hovering around the world. This clearly shows that there is a dire need to upscale agriculture in our country. Every home should be encouraged to grow their own food. Farming should be emphasised by our government. Crop farming and animal husbandry should be encouraged.

Also, the scope of supply chain in agriculture is huge and vast. Many jobs can be created along the scope of value chain in agriculture. We should as a country improve on agriculture in such a way that we have enough for our local consumption and exportation. This will not only earn us foreign exchange but will also provide food security for our country. We have land in excess and building human capital of smallholder farmers can raise productivity, increase livelihoods and improve food security when appropriately leveraged.

*Healthcare

Wars and crises force countries to act differently. COVID-19 pandemic is not an exception. This pandemic will spur policy makers to have a rethink on how to shape up the healthcare sector. It is apparent that more funds should be directed at the nation's health care systems and  health- related services. A compelling need to improve the delivery of health care and health related services is evident. The huge pressure on hospitals calls for the attention of policy makers to make available other dedicated care facilities. Incorporating telehealth is another option to be embraced. We have seen the surge in telehealth in recent times and it should be incorporated in a variety of ways.

*Home Schooling

Home schooling is an industry that is yet to be embraced by our country Nigeria. Covid-19 has allowed parents embrace home schooling. I think a lot of Nigerian youths/entrepreneurs/educators can embrace this industry by creating contents for home schooling. A lot of videos used now in our children's schools for online classes are foreign videos. Graduates looking for jobs can start to create contents for home schooling. Nigerian government should also embrace home schooling. We never know when another epidemic/pandemic will strike.
Home schooling is becoming a compelling alternative to a public school system that has presented itself as a failure. Home schooling may be considered a saviour to public school system in the future. But we can start to create content for this market that will soon emerge.
