The saying “kpa kpa kpa” in the everyday Nigerian speak, means
quick, fast, or hurriedly put together. This action applies to anything, be it
cooking, cleaning or even dressing up. Kaftans or caftans (spelling depends on
you), falls into that "kpa kpa kpa" dressing category.
Commonly referred to as boubou, agbada and more recently abaya,
kaftans are worn by both men and women. However, this article lends itself to
the womenfolk. 'Said to be of Asiatic
origin, this style of clothing has taken roots all over the world. As children,
if mum threw on a boubou, we instantly knew she was not going very far, or she
just wants to sit in the living room. The disappointment we felt knowing our
play time would be monitored or even cut short was unimaginable (lol). Kaftan
was seen as a casual outfit only fit for going shopping and lazing around.
Over the years, fashion has evolved, and these items of
clothing are not left behind. Starting with the heavily embroidered versions on
Guinea brocades, expensive laces, adire and even ankara, slowly but surely it
looked like a revolution was taking place. Intricate embellishments found a
comfortable place on them as well. Kaftans became highly sought after, not only
because it gave women confidence, but also gave them an air of sophistication
and elegance.
In an online interview with Vivienne Musa Gowon of House of Joel, I wanted to know why the kaftan is still fashionable today.
She stated that, kaftans are today's nouveau chic and an all-time classic. It is versatile in the way it
is styled and designed, it hides a multitude of sins especially for people
trying to deal with weight issues. Furthermore, she pointed out that it is now
worn by both young girls and old women because, the styles have been modified
in so many ways. Kaftans are now cut on the bias, frills, bows, and much more
are added as accessories or embellishments. They are made into cocoon dresses,
mini or midis, and can be worn formally and informally.
Finally she stated that this reinvention has made the outfit
one of the safest ways to remain elegant and classy without straying too far
from fashion's dos and don'ts.
Although kaftans, boubous, agbagdas, abayas or however we wish
to call them are synonymous with the styles and traditions of certain parts of
the world, that has not stopped it finding its way to the catwalks of renowned
high-end fashion houses like Chanel, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Etro Versace amongst others, who have taken it
to a world class level.
There are no set set rules as to what material is perfect for a
kaftan in recent times. They come in various colours, vibrant prints, and
luxurious fabrics like silk, satin, chiffon and much more.
As our Muslim brothers and sisters celebrate Eid or Ileya
depending where they reside, let us look out for beautiful and elegantly
dressed ladies in this fantastic outfit.
Barka de sallah to all our Muslim brothers and sisters.
