You may not believe this that the tough-talking
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, is after all, a loving family man to
the core with such passion and emotional balance, which make him concentrate on
giving people of Rivers State value for good governance as he is popular with
his nickname MR. PROJECTS.
There is no public function which has the number
one couple of Rivers State in attendance without the governor taking up his
hands to beckon his wife, Justice Suzette Eberechi Wike, as a way of showing
members of the public that he is a caring father and husband, who does not
neglect keeping his home front in order. With this, he is not only encouraging
other couples in the state to emulate him and provide emotional balance with
their spouses, but also telling them to do like him.
If you think that planting a kiss on wife publicly
is fake, try and see how deep the Rivers State governor displays his love for
his wife at public functions, which has a mark of assurance per se and it is
usually, fulfilling indeed.
Ethically, Governor Wike is correct as his
“handlers” must have given him a thumb up for doing it for the first time and
sensing how rewarding the reactions from his citizens must have been, keeps
doing it regularly. He is not the only kissing public officer as the United
States of America (USA’s) First Lady Barbara Bush in her autobiography
entitled: MEMOIRS-BARBARA BUSH (1994) did explain thus:
“There were always
innuendoes that we were not lovey-dovey enough in public. That is not us. We
don’t need to be public about our affection; it’s just there. I know that
perception is very important in public life, but I also know that people can
spot fakes. It may take a while, but eventually they do. We both resisted the
handlers request that we hold hands or whatever”.
It is in this regard for care for women in the
state that Governor Wike made sure that all the Deputy Chairmen of 23 Local
Government Councils in his People’s Democratic Party- PDP are women and one of
them is heading Asari Toru Local Government Council as a result of the death of
Odiari Princewill during the
Coronavirus pandemic lockdown. In the executive
cabinet, where apart from the traditional Ministry of Women Affairs and Social
Development, women are heading other Ministries such as Culture and Tourism
where Mrs. Tonye Briggs-Oniyide is holding sway.
